I was seated towards the back of the crowd with a flag pole in one hand - my left hand, to be exact - on a ground sheet that was spread out nicely on the tar road under the open sky. It was around 8pm and the sky was pitch black. I was seated with a crowd that was proudly wearing their Royal Ranger's uniform. It was the opening ceremony for the 6th Malaysian Royal Rangers Camporama and all of us fixed our eyes on the commander that was speaking.
My eyelids felt a little heavy from the day's activity so I decided to let my eyes do a little wandering. Soon, I found myself staring into the mountains. Although it was extremely dark, I could see the solid figure of the mountains. They took my breath away when I was admiring them in the morning. It felt like I was walking into a country scene that was being broadcast on a television. You know those country scenes where there were mountains after mountains; I was seeing them right before my eyes. The different hues of greens of the mountains that were in front were darker than the ones that were behind. It seemed as if the shades of green were slowly fading away into the beautiful baby blue sky.
As I was letting my eyes take in whatever that could still be seen in the dark, a sudden silent flash of light appeared out of nowhere. It was fierce at first but as it lingered it became gentle and soft then it slowly faded into the night sky. It made me jumped a little when my eyes' receptors sent this sight to my brain. I quickly said a silent prayer, hoping that it wouldn't pour.
Just when I was about to advert my gaze back to the commander that was speaking, it happened again - the flashing of light. As it faded into the night sky again, the person who was sitting in front of me turned and asked me ''Did you see that?''. I was caught a little off guard when I was asked with the question. But he continued ''The lightning''. I nodded silently. ''I just love them''. And with that, he turned back. I didn't know how to respond. Someone admiring lightnings? He was the first one I knew that admired lightning.
Moments later, lighting appeared in the night sky again. But this time, I didn't jump, instead I actually gave my full attention to it; making sure that I took every single detail that was happening in with my two eyes. And for the first time of my life, I admired it. Turns out, it was beautiful. Many a times, I take lightnings as bad signs and I find them scary. But after that encounter with that lightning, I found myself taking a little liking to lightnings.
You see, God made everything and everyone beautiful, even lightnings - something that would scare little children. Now, I love everything about the sky and everything that happens/appears in the sky. They are so beautiful! :)
