What can I do?

I am a thirteen-year-old student living in Petaling Jaya. I am disturbed by what I see around me – especially the unnecessary wastage amidst us. I want to see my future generation growing up to be healthy and successful. Today, we can see banners and advertisements saying that the Earth is not treated properly and is very ill. Even scientists are predicting that the world is going to end soon. What’s the use of hoping for something to happen in the future but not doing anything to save the world now? It’s useless.

We have to start applying the 3Rs – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE - in our daily life. Start recycling! Don’t just throw old newspapers and tin cans all over the place. You can collect them and send them to the recycling centres nearest your home and probably earn some money. You are doing a good deed and earning some money at the same time.

Reduce. Start reducing the usage of water and electricity. Use a cup when brushing your teeth. We can accumulate rain water and use it to wash our car or water plants the following day. Try not to use air-conditioning on rainy or cool days. Only use the air-con on really hot days. Switch off fans and lights before vacating the room. Besides that, we should start carpooling to reduce the usage of petrol and the amount of carbon monoxide. We shouldn’t buy things that are unnecessary. Not only are we wasting our money, we are also occupying space in our homes.

Reuse. Worn-out tyres can be used as garden planters – something unique. Always bring along some recyclable bags when going for grocery shopping. Say ‘NO’ to plastic bags.

Besides applying the 3Rs in our daily life, we should start planting trees instead of felling them whenever we fancy that. Living things need oxygen to survive and the source of oxygen comes from trees. We shouldn’t litter. Let our future generation enjoy the beauty of nature. Do not destroy such beauty.

Would you want to see your future generation suffer? If you don’t, start doing your part to save the environment. You can make a difference.
